Research is fun, there is no need to complicate it.

Hussein is a Professor and Chair of Information Technology at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA) in Canberra, Australia. He has a BA, B.Sc., PG-Dip, and Masters all from Cairo University Egypt, a M.Sc. from Edinburgh University Scotland, and a PhD from QUT Australia. He is the Director of the university Defence and Security Applications Research Centre (DSARC) at UNSW@ADFA, an Advisory Professor at Vietnam National University, Ho-Chi Minh City, a fellow of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM), a senior member of the IEEE, the chair of ACS National Committee on Complex Systems, the chair of the IEEE Task Force on Complex Adaptive Systems and Artificial Life, and a member of a number of national and international committees including the IEEE working group on soft computing in the SMC society.

Current research interest

My research focus is on Computational and Mathematical Modelling. The word "computational" does not necessarily mean "computerised", "computer models" or that the model will generate a "computer software". In fact, some of the work I do focuses on models to help strategic management to think about uncertainty in long term planning. In this work, the computational models I produce can be paper-based or simply a thinking model. A substantial amount of the work I do uses computational and mathematical modelling to help management to "think" through rather than to "solve" the problem they are facing. Hence, my focus is on problems that are complex, where a single model - be it mathematical or otherwise - or even a group of models can't solve the problem without proper interaction with the human executives. The majority - I would say 90% - of the fundamental research I do, albeit being sometimes so fundamental and the scientific papers by their nature are too narrow or focused - are motivated by the bottlenecks I face when dealing with a real-world problem.
